Thailand and Myanmar were struck by a powerful 7.7-mag earthquake. A massive dust cloud was produced in Bangkok when a high-rise building that was still under construction collapsed. People could be seen running and screaming in a social media video. Police are checking the site but do not yet know if there are injuries. A 6.4 magnitude aftershock followed. Many people in Bangkok ran out of buildings for safety.
A tourist in a shopping mall said the building started shaking, and people panicked, running down escalators. The exact center of the earthquake was close to Mandalay in Myanmar. It destroyed some roads, a 90-year-old bridge, and a historic palace. Shrine and house damage caused residents to hurry outside in Naypyitaw and Yangon. People in Bangkok evacuated when alarms went off. To evaluate the damage, the prime minister of Thailand convened an urgent meeting.
