Hitendra Dev Shakya became the new head of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) on Tuesday after Kulman Ghising was removed from the position on Monday. Ghising’s removal led to political protests and street demonstrations in Kathmandu. Many leaders, including those from the ruling party, opposed the government’s decision. Some Congress leaders criticized the move, while others remained silent.
The government removed Ghising because of an electricity deal with India and power cuts to some industries. Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali said Ghising ignored government orders. Prime Minister Oli defended the decision, saying people were making a big issue out of a small matter. However, opposition parties plan to discuss the issue in Parliament. Ghising said he will challenge the decision in court. In 2021, Shakya also went to court when Ghising replaced him, but the case remains unresolved.
