The government of Nepal has officially implemented the Iodized Salt Production and Distribution Act after 26 years, when the act was passed as far back as 1998. The law did not come into effect as there was no notification in the gazette, although the cabinet decided to implement the law from Baisakh 2. This allows ease for the Ministry of Health to take action against health problems resulting from excessive iodine in children, including high blood pressure and thyroid problems. Previous studies indicated excessive iodine intake levels. Now that the law is in effect, the government can write rules, set standards, and better coordinate public health.
