Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan have received a sentence of death at a special tribunal over their use of deadly force in addressing the 2024 student uprising that claimed hundreds of students. Both had taken refuge abroad in India and had been put on trial in absentia. One of the former police chiefs who was provided as a witness against them was sentenced to five years. Hasina disapproved of the judgment as political. The decision has escalated the situation in Bangladesh, where demonstrations, black burnings, and high security have occurred. The interim government of Muhammad Yunus intends to hold elections in February and has prohibited the party of Hasina, though Bangladesh has requested India to send her back, but India has not.
