In Kanchanpur, the District Administration Office has encouraged the nine local levels of government to initiate a special campaign to bring down the use of Chhaugoths, menstrual huts, following the death of a woman, Kamala Damai, due to a snake bite that she incurred after staying in a Chhaugoth. There is a threat of a Rs 10,000 fine for the failure to clear up the huts within 15 days, but local leaders say such deep-rooted culture is very difficult to get rid of, and the locals tend to build up the huts again out of sheer superstition.
