Social Media bill proposes up to Rs 500,000 fine for online trolling

The government has introduced a new bill that states if an individual is found to be trolling anyone online, will be fined up to Rs. 500,000. Minister of Communications and Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, introduced the bill in National Assembly which further mentions any form of online trolling like using offensive words, audio, video, or any form of defaming or humiliating content that can hamper someone’s honor or reputation includes penalties up to three years of imprisonment, fine up to Rs 500,000 or both.The bill also mentions banning of hacking, scams, phishing, spreading false or misleading information while making deepfake videos legal violation.
