Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah and the chair of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rabi Lamichhane, have for the first time resolved to collaborate in national politics, unlike in the times when they both failed to collaborate on clearing squatter settlements. Following additional pressure from the Gen Z movement on other political forces to form alliances, the two leaders met and signed a seven point agreement to collectively challenge the 2021 House of Representatives election. Under the deal, Lamichhane remains RSP chair, Shah will be the party’s parliamentary leader if elected, and Shah will be projected as the prime ministerial candidate, while the party’s structure and symbol remain unchanged. The alliance reflects growing unity among alternative political forces focused on good governance, elections, and development.
