Google issues warning to 1.8 billion Gmail users; accounts may be closed if ignored

Gmail

Google has created a security alert to the 1.8 billion users of the Gmail system, warning them that they must enable two-step verification in order to secure their Gmail accounts. In addition to a password, users also require verifying their identity through a code that is relayed to them on their phone, an app, or a security key before being granted access to the account. It is an obligatory procedure and should be given within a period of 15-30 days after a Google notification; otherwise, the account may want to be permanently blocked. This is to fight the growing cases of spam, phishing, and cyber scams since Gmail is associated with several personal and valuable services, such as Google Docs, YouTube, smart devices, and even bank accounts.
