Government Moves to Remove Deputy Speaker Over Visa Letter Controversy

Deputy Speaker

The ruling Nepali Congress and UML aim to remove Deputy Speaker Indira Rana by reviving a visa related controversy from over a year ago. They seek a two thirds parliamentary majority with cross party support to lodge a motion accusing unbecoming conduct. The issue centers on a letter Rana wrote about a United States visa interview for several people two and a half years ago and possible misuse of letterhead. Internal party dissent exists over timing and procedure while some fear political opportunism. The removal would follow Article 91 subsection g and related rules allowing a defense and possible withdrawal.
