US Says New Fuel Economy Rule Could Lead to Return of Station Wagons

1970s station wagon cars

The Trump administration has suggested the removal of fuel economy rules, arguing that the reversal of the rule could even revive the 1970s station wagon cars. The Transportation Department claims that as a result of the tough fuel regulations, the automakers were driving away the production of wagons. The new plan would have a minimum fuel economy of 34.5 miles per gallon by 2031, compared to 50.4 mpg. The plan might make the new cars nearly a thousand dollars cheaper, however, it would also result in more fuel consumption, cause billions of dollars of fuel expenses, and lower carbon emissions. Nobody has stopped transportation, which is the key producer of U.S. greenhouse gases.
