Apple Opens IPhone to Alternative App Stores in Japan

Apple said it has changed its rules in Japan to follow new laws meant to increase competition in the smartphone market. Japanese developers can now create their own app stores on iPhones and pay Apple lower fees, starting from 5%, and can also use their own payment systems alongside Apple’s. Apple will still check apps for basic security and require age ratings. The new rules reduce Apple’s long-standing control over the App Store in Japan while, according to Apple, still protecting user privacy and safety.
