As cable car protests get violent, Taplejung imposes a prohibition order.

People protesting in Taplejung over cable car matter

In Phungling and Kaflepati, the Pathibhara cable car project has created tension, prompting the chief district officer to issue a prohibitory order. “This will mean gatherings, rallies, and demonstrations are prohibited until further notice,” the order says. Things turned violent on Saturday, with clashes between demonstrators and police, and several protesters and police officials were said to have been injured.

Protesters have cited environmental impacts and threats to Limbu culture and local livelihoods as the reasons for their opposition to the project. Other groups are still protesting while the government is trying to negotiate.
