Police officials have criticized the Nepal government’s proposed amendment to the Nepal Police Act of 1955. The bill, which was filed in January 2025, has proposed that the mobilization of police would have to be directly supervised by the Ministry of Home Affairs and that the chief district officer (CDO) would have the authority over police staffers responsible for maintaining law and order. The police officers do not accept this and demand that such control should remain with the police chief and not with the home ministry or CDO.
The proposals also include how police leadership is chosen and how long the officers are in their jobs, including a three-year term for the Inspector General (IG) and a recommendation committee led by the home secretary, opening the possibility for political interference. Retirement age and service duration provisions have also attracted criticism. However, according to the Home Minister, the bill will be modified before being approved.
