China to Ban ‘Hidden’ Car Door Handles to Address Safety Fears

China to ban hidden car door handles

China will ban hidden car door handles from 2027 over safety concerns, becoming the first country to phase out the design made popular by Tesla and used by brands like Xiaomi. The new rules require all cars to have clearly visible interior and exterior door handles, with mandatory mechanical releases so doors can be opened during emergencies. New car models must follow the rules from 2027, while existing approved models have until 2029, after incidents raised concerns that hidden handles can delay rescue efforts during accidents.
