The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has officially prohibited the burning of waste and plastics as a measure of reducing air pollution and preventing health damage to people. With the environment in the valley getting worse as the winter sets in, the Environment Management Department of the city said this was to reduce toxic smoke that pollutes the air and exposes people to serious health consequences, particularly the children, the elderly, and people with respiratory or heart related complications. The fine established by KMC under the environmental laws on waste burning will be against the offenders who are caught burning the waste. The program emphasizes the aspect that KMC is committed to ensuring the air is cleaner and the city becomes more sustainable and healthy for its citizens.
