Mobile phone imports increased sharply last month ahead of the March 5 general election. 162,000 phones worth Rs 3.38 billion were imported to Nepal between mid January and mid February, which is nearly 49 percent more than the same period last year. In the first seven months of the current fiscal year, the country imported over 1.4 million phones worth Rs 26.68 billion. The government collected Rs 4.97 billion in customs revenue from these imports through VAT and excise duties.
