New York Times Reporter Sues Google, xAI, OpenAI Over Chatbot Training

New York Times Reporter Sues Google

Investigative journalist John Carreyrou, known for exposing the Theranos scandal, has sued several major AI companies, including xAI, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Anthropic, and Perplexity, for allegedly using copyrighted books by Carreyrou and other writers without permission to train their AI systems. Filed in a California court with five different authors, the lawsuit accuses the companies of illegally copying books for their chatbots. The writers say they are suing individually, not as a group, because past settlements gave authors very small payouts. The companies have not yet commented on the case.
