The Raute nomadic group leader, Surya Narayan Shahi, died from overconsumption of alcohol on Monday night. He took the position of chief in May 2015 to lead his group at Sotkhola within Barahatal Rural Municipality–8. The Raute community is Nepal’s only indigenous nomadic group that travels periodically to maintain forest resources. The Raute community still encounters major health problems despite receiving assistance because they experience high infant death rates, along with malnutrition, inadequate maternal healthcare, and extensive alcohol abuse that damages their overall community health.
