Tribhuvan International Airport(TIA) in Kathmandu welcomed a total of 4.96 million international passengers in 2024, five times more as compared to the year 2000. This is mainly due to the rising number of tourist arrivals, Nepali migrant workers going overseas, and students traveling abroad. TIA recorded 33,247 flight movements in 2024, a 5.68% increase compared to 2023. However, the continuous lack of infrastructure hampers operations at the airport, though ongoing construction work aims to increase the airport’s capacity.
Qatar Airways ranked first in terms of several passengers, while the second one was given to Nepal Airlines, which registered a decrease in passenger volume due to fleet maintenance issues. Passenger traffic is still sturdy, despite these hurdles, and with further infrastructure work, such as the new parallel taxiway, which is set to be completed by 2026, such is projected to rise.
