Kathmandu’s Babarmahal area was heavily waterlogged following the bursting of a big water supply pipe on the main road. The rupture occurred when the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) was horizontally drilling to lay the underground power supply cables. The drilling process damaged the crucial pipeline that connects the main water supply system, said Tika Bahadur Chaudhary, head of the Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Project Implementation Directorate.
Even though the water distribution valve was turned off right after the accident, water kept running and there was a lot of flooding in the area. The burst pipe submerged the Special Court in Babarmahal, adjacent government buildings, and parked vehicles in the area. It created a major traffic jam in the area, making matters worse.
