US airstrikes against Islamic State targets took place in northwest Nigeria on Thursday, with President Trump referring to the airstrikes as “powerful and deadly.” The Nigerian government confirmed the strikes as being coordinated with the US government and targeting terrorist areas. According to the US African Command, multiple ISIS terrorists died in Sokoto State. President Trump connected these airstrikes to his previous comments about attacks against Christians in Nigeria, while the Nigerian government stated that it is working with the US government to combat radicalism. In addition, the strikes occurred during a time of continuing violence in Nigeria, caused primarily by jihadi movements and organized crime, which has affected nearly every Nigerian citizen.
