CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has announced that the company will open its self-driving robotaxi service to the general population on June 22, beginning in Austin, Texas. He added that the date is subject to alteration because of safety considerations. It will initiate the service with approximately 10-20 Model Y cars, and they will serve within a limited zone with remotely controlled human oversight.
Musk also said that as of June 28, Tesla vehicles will be self-driven to a customer’s home from the Tesla factory. The step is among the larger changes toward self-driving technology at Tesla because the EV sales have stagnated. Expansion of the robotaxi service to other states of the U.S. and even California, although the regulatory environment is challenging, is planned by the company later.
